Deleting your account
How to delete your Wesprs account from inside the app, what is erased, and the one thing you can never get back.
How to delete it
- Open the Wesprs app and go to the Me tab.
- Tap Account & data.
- Under "Danger zone", choose Delete account, confirm it's you with your passkey or recovery phrase, and type DELETE.
- Confirm one last time. A 60-second countdown starts — the deletion runs when it reaches zero. Tap "Cancel — keep my account" inside the window to stop it.
The 60-second countdown
Deletion is irreversible, so we make it deliberate rather than a single accidental tap: you first confirm it's you (passkey or recovery phrase) and type DELETE. After the final confirmation, a single 60-second countdown starts — your one window to change your mind. Tap "Cancel — keep my account" inside that window and nothing is deleted. When the countdown reaches zero, the deletion is carried out server-side: live systems clear within about a minute, and there is no email link to click. Backup copies roll over within 90 days, as described below.
What gets deleted
Wesprs holds very little to begin with — there is no legal name, no email identity, and no face on file. Deleting your account removes the rest, with the narrow exceptions listed in the next section:
- Your account record and pseudonymous handle.
- Your verification snapshot — the small non-biometric record that you passed verification.
- Any profile, posts, messages, and images you still have live. (These already expire server-side within 24 hours of creation; deletion removes anything inside that window.)
- Your push-notification token and subscription link held by us.
What we keep
A few narrowly-scoped things outlive the deletion — we would rather tell you ourselves:
- Backup copies roll over and are purged within 90 days; in that time they are not readable as a live account.
- If an open abuse report names you, the minimal report metadata is retained under the safety and legal-claims carve-out in Section 6 of the Privacy Policy — up to roughly 3 years in the EU, 6 in the UK, and 5 in the US — and then deleted.
- The one-way abuse-resistance hash that enforces a ban survives deletion, so a banned person cannot undo a ban by deleting and re-registering. It cannot be reversed into an identity.
- Our append-only audit log keeps its entries — decisions and timestamps, never your content.
What you cannot recover
Because Wesprs uses no email or phone number as your identity, there is no account-recovery email to fall back on. Your recovery phrase (the mnemonic you were shown at sign-up) is the only key to your account — we never hold a copy. If you delete your account, that account and its handle are gone for good; signing up again creates a brand-new identity with a new handle. Keep your recovery phrase somewhere safe only as long as you want the account; once you have deleted, it cannot bring the account back.
If you are stuck
If the app will not let you reach the deletion screen — for example you are locked out and no longer have your recovery phrase — contact support and we will help you complete the deletion. We will not ask you for an email-as-identity or any real-world identifier we do not hold.
